▪️The Verdict: Pucker up you thirsty sons a bitches cause I got a sweet treat that's gonna knock your socks off. Introducing Tart N Juicy Sour IPA brewed by Epic Brewing in Salt Lake City, Utah. Remember Warheads? Those 10¢ candy you used to steal from the corner store growing up that used to make you borderline gag they were so sour? That's what this beer reminds me of but in liquid form and not as powerful. This past week I picked one of these up at the local craft beer cellar and was baptized into the sour beer world for the first time.
Like the world of stinky cheese or dry aged meats, entering the sour beer realm is an acquired taste. Sour beers are probably the oldest style of brew in the world, but they're just starting to gain momentum in the States as the US craft beer market matures. Sour beers use minimal hops and are similar to yogurt in the way that they use intentionally bacteria microbes (the good kind of course) which helps produce the sour flavor.
Tart ‘n Juicy is a 4.5 % ABV, kettle-soured India Pale Ale with notes of grapefruit, lemon and tangerine. The beer claims to be loaded with Citra and Amarillo hops, but for an IPA I felt it was a little weak in the hops department, or maybe it was masked by the tartness. Being my first sour beer I was definitely intrigued by the flavor profile. It was unlike any other beer I had tasted. It delivered the mild sourness and tart flavors you expect up front along with light hop bitterness, but it tasted watered down to me. I enjoyed the concept of the sour beer and by no means am I closing the door on it. It was something different than the usual in your face hop bombs that litter the beer market, but it seemed a little one dimensional to me.
