▪️Brewer: @StoneBrewingCo (Escondido, CA)
▪️Beer: Enjoy By 4.20.16 IPA
▪️Style: Double IPA
▪️Alc. Content: 9.4% ABV (88 IBU)
▪️The Verdict: You MAY have heard it is 4/20 today, so before I start off with this week's review, I just want to say Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler, he loved beer and he would have been 127 today, so hats off to him.
If you're reading this it's too late… this week's craft selection was designed specifically NOT to last (insert self-deprecating sex joke here). In most cases, that's a business model destined to fail, but it seems to be paying dividends for Stone Brewing Co who started their "Enjoy By" IPA series long before it was considered cool. The beer industry is a copycat league and other brewers like Samuel Adams have followed suit, brewing their own deadline laden Double IPAs (Rebel Raw). Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and that saying hold true here.
Imperial IPA's, also known as Double IPA's, are best enjoyed fresh due to their high hop potency. They usually sit around 9% ABV and exceed 100 IBUs and if not enjoyed within 4-5 weeks of production they lose their mojo. Being the forward thinkers that they are, Stone actually named their beers by their expiration date, eliminating any confusion for us simpletons who "can't read……good".
Enjoy By 4.20.16 is a world class beer and if you were lucky enough to find one congratulations. I was blown away by the assault of the dank piney and citric hops which were strong enough to strip teeth enamel. The hops were backed by simple pale malts that provided just a touch of sweetness. This was a sticky hop bomb that coated my tongue and throat on the way down, providing a long lingering hop aftertaste. The alcohol was well hidden, making this very drinkable despite the near double digit ABV. I will categorize this as an essential beer if you are a hophead. Happy HoliDAZE!
