SleeperMovie Monday Presents:
Dogtown and the Z-Boys
As the sun was shining upon my tear filled face on my drive to work this morning I thought to myself, “Hey Hutch, only 30 more years of doing something you have absolutely no interest in.” Which oddly enough didn’t turn my morning around. That’s when today’s sleeper movie hit me. “Dogtown and the Z-Boys (2001) is a documentary about the revolutionary Zephyr Skating team that transformed skateboarding throughout the 1970s-90s. You may know them better as “The Lords of Dogtown” from the 2005 film. Back in the 70’s when the surf sucked a few bros would turn to skateboarding as an alternative to pass the time.
Over the years, skaters/surfers like Tony Alva, Jay Adams, and Stacey Peralta would alter the skateboarding spectrum forever. Imitating the freestyle surfing moves they watched and performed their whole lives, they turned skateboarding from a land bound pastime into the extreme and acrobatic present that we know today. Without Dogtown and the Z-Boys, we wouldn’t have half the exciting shit you see in the X-games now. One of the only things I know about skateboarding is to choose Rodney Mullen if you’re playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. That being said, I learned a lot from this doc and I highly recommend it even if you aren’t into skateboarding. Good doc to get inspired and find your passion. Might just walk out of the office right now and follow my own dreams. What could go wrong?
I’ll always take the doc over Hollywood. Doc M&F rating: 7.4
Hollywood M&F rating: 6.7
