With St Patrick’s Day looming around the corner, I undoubtedly had to go with a film that had some quality Irish ties to it for this weeks SleeperMovie. From the beautiful year of 1997 comes The Boxer. Daniel Day Lewis portrays an Irish boxer named Danny Flynn who was put away for an IRA related crime for 14 years. When he’s released he’s in his 30’s with nothing really going for him. Danny has to rebuild his entire life amidst the chaotic and tumultuous environment of Belfast that’s ravaged by political violence for decades.
Although it’s called The Boxer, this movie has a lot to offer aside from the boxing aspect. You get a little love story, but you also get to dive into the situation in Ireland. The shit that’s been going down in the homeland is scary stuff. It’s a straight up civil war in Northern Ireland. As a result of my strong Irish heritage I’m always intrigued by a movie that’ll incorporate the IRA and what’s happening in there. Aside from The Devil’s Own, The Boxer may be my favorite Irish movie that’s been made.
To no surprise at all, Daniel Day Lewis steals the show in The Boxer. In my opinion he is the best and most talented actor in all of Hollywood. Nobody embodies or becomes a character like Daniel Day Lewis. Nothing he does is going to be half-assed. You’re going to get 150% out of him with every role he takes. It’s no different in The Boxer. He gives one of the purest performances of a boxer that you’ll see in Hollywood. The way he moves and the way he punches he just looks like he had been boxing his whole life. He’s just awesome to watch. No way around it.
M&F Rating: 7.3
