SleeperMovie Monday is back with one of my favorite movies from the 80’s. Vision Quest came out in during 1985, which coincidently was one of Boston’s best years in Sports as a City. Vision Quest was directed by Harold Becker and stars Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino. Aside from playing Joker from Full Metal Jacket, this is probably my favorite Matthew Modine performance.
Vision Quest is about a talented High School wrestler Louden Swain. It’s Louden’s Senior year in High School and he wants to do something great. He wants to do something that nobody thinks he can do. Against the wishes of his couch and even his father, Louden decides to cut from 190 lbs to 168 lbs so he can wrestle the defending state champion that nobody can fuck with, Shute. Shute’s character can be correlated to that of Ivan Drago. A beheamouth of an athlete who nobody seems to be in the same league with.
Coupled with Louden Swain’s mission to take out Shute and do something extraordinary, Louden finds himself falling for a drifter (Linda Fiorentino, Dogma). A tale as old as time, his feelings for this girl leads to a mission to get in her pants..which begins to get in the way of his Vision Quest.
It was a fun ride to join Louden throughout his journey to take on Shute. I thought the film did a decent job at showing the health detriments to cutting that much weight, but thought they could have focused a bit more it. I felt like they could have made cutting that much weight that short amount of time a little more realistic/dramatic. Throughout this film you meet a variety of interesting and unique characters which kept the movie refreshing for me. A true 1980’s soundtrack was a plus as well. Keep your eyes peeled for the swamp donkey of all swamp donkeys, Madonna, for a cameo.
M&F Rating: 6.8
P.S. Nobody should ever have to sacrifice food…nobody..
